AIDA: desk research in Campobasso - the Arabëreshë language
Overview

Is there an Adriatic culture? Is there an Adriatic identity? Alberto Cirese states that "Identity is not a bundle of objective data; it is rather a choice that is subjectively made. It is recognizing oneself in something that is sometimes only a part of what one actually is. Identity is the transformation of a data into a value. Identity is not what one is; identity is the self-image that each one gives to himself. Therefore the identity in Campobasso and in Molise is in the inhabitants themselves, those who speak this ancient Albanian language: arbëreshë for many years was lived with pride and as a banner of family and local identity by the Italos -albanians but in the years of the economic boom and the radical transformation of our country it was perceived by the younger groups as a legacy to be overcome or an obstacle to their path of emancipation. Only following that radical break and on the basis of work and study experiences will some young Arbëreshë start rediscovering and capitalization processes.
